Since I have my surgery date (Nov. 18), and I know I have to start my all liquid diet on Nov. 4th, I decided to get ahead of this protein shake thing and try some out. So far, I have tried three different flavors of protein shakes and I have one more that I will taste at later date. I thought I would rate each one based on taste, consistency and after taste. Maybe by writing it down in black and white, I could decided whether or not one of these would make the cut. I do have to drink 5 of these shakes a day for 2 weeks! I may as well get flavors that I like and can tolerate. Right?
The very first one I drank was Bariatric Advantage Orange Cream. I bought an 8 oz bottle of really cold water to mix this with. It came in it’s own pre-measured bottle, so it was easy to do. It mixed up smoothly without any lumps or clumps, and surprisingly, had a very orangey (it that a word?) smell. Not a powdery, manufactured smell. But the taste was really good! I could not believe it! It was like drinking orange juice with a protein powder kick. But not in an unpleasant sort of way. On a scale of 1-10, this was a 9 for sure. So I am keeping Orange Cream in my pocket as a sure choice.
My next shake adventure was Bariatric Advantage Strawberry. Now I like strawberries, whether in their natural state with Splenda or in ice cream etc. But NOT this strawberry! Sadly to say, this was not pleasant tasting or smelling. It did not mix up smoothly no matter how much I shook it or banged the bottle on my desk (that caused a few looky loos). Also, it tasted artificial and the smell was gross. It was all I could do to swallow that down. I had to- it was my lunch! This one is a big NO for me. I would give this a 2 out of 10.
The last protein shake in my taste test arsenal is the Bariatric Advantage Vanilla. This shake mixed up smoothly with no lumps or clumps, and it smelled kinda sweet. But the taste was sickenly sweet. Almost like really maple syrup pancakes. It was too sweet for me. I know that sounds kinda crazy coming from a sweet tooth like me, but it was! This would not be one I would choose either. I would give this one a 4 out of 10.
I still have an Unjury Chocolate Splendor protein shake to taste, but I find the older I get, the more I am not partial to chocolate anymore. Imagine the HORROR! All of the shakes I have tasted you can mix with water not milk, if you are lactose intolerant. So for now, I guess the Orange Cream is my favorite. Hopefully, I will get to taste a few more before I have to make up my mind. Or maybe find a companion shake to the Orange Cream and mix it up. Or get some extracts to add extra flavor to the protein shakes. Who knows? I have until 11/4 to work it out.
Until next time friends.
